Architected Materials Group

Our lab addresses a variety of topics in the general area of mechanics of materials and structures. The overarching goal is the solution of technological problems through the integration of analytical, computational and experimental techniques. Depending on the specific problem at hand, we study and apply concepts and methods of solid mechanics, materials science, and advanced manufacturing. Currently, the key area of research is the development of mechanical metamaterials with superior combinations of properties. We are based in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. Please, visit the Research page to learn more about active projects.

Lorenzo Valdevit is an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of California, Irvine, where he directs the Architected Materials lab.

Lorenzo is also the inaugural director of the Institute for Design and Manufacturing Innovation (IDMI) in the Samueli School of Engineering. Founded in 2015, IDMI has the overarching goal of establishing UCI as a national leader in advanced manufacturing, through research, education and outreach.
